Beautiful large hand-carved and etched gourd from Peru, known as a mate burilado — a traditional Andean folk art form practiced for centuries. This striking piece depicts detailed village scenes with figures, animals, and foliage carved into the natural gourd and highlighted with burnished tones of brown and black.

Each design is meticulously incised by hand using fine tools, making every piece one-of-a-kind. The gourd has a gently curved, elongated shape with a stylized human face at the top and layered storytelling scenes wrapping around the body.

• Origin: Peru (Cochas or Huancayo region)

• Technique: Hand-carved and pyro-etched (mate burilado)

• Material: Natural dried gourd

• Height: Approx. 17”

• Width: Approx. 4”

• Condition: Excellent overall with minor natural surface wear consistent with age

A remarkable example of South American folk art, perfect for collectors or as a unique decorative accent in global or boho-inspired interiors.
